Position Summary
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), under the direction of the physician or other designated licensed staff, provides patient care in an ambulatory setting with kindness and compassion; understanding the Mission of the University of the Incarnate Word and the School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM). The position can work as part of a team with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and students in the health professions. They perform both clinical and administrative duties.

The CMA observes patient status and documents observations in the electronic medical record (EMR) or chart. They assist other team members in identifying patient needs or concerns. The CMA delivers quality customer care and service, ensuring policy and procedures are followed while maintaining privacy and confidentiality.

This position is considered a "Responsible Employee" under Title IX federal regulations and "Mandatory Reporter" under Texas state law and the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you, as the employee, to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about Title IX violations. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Job Duties

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Good communication and customer service skills.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
High level use of EMR, scheduling, notes, and billing.
Ability to verify insurance, schedule and room patients.
Computer literacy and use of MS Office, Excel and Outlook email.
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education
High school graduate or GED equivalent.

Required Work Experience

One year of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in primary care with Womens Health.
Experience using EMR.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Working knowledge and experience working with MS Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

Some college education preferred.
At least five years of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in primary care with Womens Health.
Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

Current nationally recognized Medical Assistant certification.
Current BLS certification or the ability to obtain the certification within 30 days of employment.

Work Hours
Typical Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm.Rotate 1 week on-call every 5 weeks.

Physical Demands

Able to lift up to 25 pounds.
This position requires Tuberculosis screening as well as proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis through lab confirmation of immunity, documented evidence of vaccination, or a doctors diagnosis of disease.
