ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PARAMEDIC/EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT) (Non-Tenure)

LOCATION: 8100 GIGANTIC STREET, SAN DIEGO, CA 92154

TEMPORARY FOR 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR ONLY

If you have worked as an adjunct at Southwestern College with a workload exceeding 67% (from fall 2016 to spring 2018), you will not be eligible for appointment to this full time position, pursuant to Education Code 87478 to 87482.

This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, extension sites, and online or hybrid assignments.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Dean of the Higher Education Center at Otay Mesa, teach the courses of Paramedic and Emergency Medical Technician programs and other related classes, as necessary.

Southwestern College's Paramedic program has been nationally accredited for more than a decade and our graduates are consistently sought out as desirable employees and quality practitioners. Our program is designed to assist students in their pursuit of a career in paramedicine, but is also an important step towards gaining a career in the fire service. The paramedic program is cohort based lasting approximately 12 months which includes didactic, clinical rotations and field internship. At the conclusion of the program, we willassistthe student in their preparation for the National Registry Exam in which our students have enjoyed a98% pass-rate on their first attempt. In addition to the complete paramedic curriculum, our program also offers preparatory courses and refresher training.

We are currently seeking an experienced paramedic to fill the sole full-time faculty position in our accredited paramedic program.The instructor may be assigned to teach in either the EMT and/or paramedic program based on departmental needs. The desired candidate is a proven prehospital care provider and has experience in teaching, mentoring, and leading those around them. In addition, we are seeking a candidate who is familiar with the rigors and expectations which come with accreditation status, as well as one who has the ability to form partnerships in the community. Our EMT, paramedic and fire science training programs are working towards ensuring continuity within the programs and we would like a candidate who has a fire service background or understands the common dynamics between the EMS and fire services.

CALIFORNIA CODE OF REGULATIONS QUALIFICATIONS FOR PARAMEDIC/EMT PRINCIPAL INSTRUCTOR:
Any bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience in an allied health field OR Any associates degree and 6 six years of experience in an allied health field AND Certified or Licensed in the State of California as a Physician, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or Paramedic AND Forty (40) hours of documented instruction in teaching methodology AND Two years of academic or clinical experience in the practice of emergency medicine or prehospital care in the last five (5) years.

for Southwestern College is desirable.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Recent work experience as a field paramedic or recent experience as a Mobile Intensive Care Nurse within the State of California. Teaching experience in an accredited paramedic training program. Recent experience working in an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) role within the fire service.

A teaching demonstration and writing assignment will be required of those invited for an interview.

SALARY & BENEFITS:
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based upon years of experience and education. The maximum initial placement for experience is Step 6. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
